About Us
Launched in 2009, Farm2Forest is an Irish charity with the aim of returning existing farm land in Ireland back to native Irish forests. We are currently in the process of agreeing to purchase 25 hectares of land located in north County Wexford in the southeast corner of Ireland. Our aim is to restore this land to nativel forest using various species of trees indigenous to Ireland. These species will include Oak, Hazel, Mountain Ash (Rowan), Silver Birch, & Scots Pine. To achieve this we are aiming to plant over 100,000 trees over the next 2 to 3 years.
Restoring the land back to a natural forest will provide the following benefits to the environment:
- Remove unwanted carbon from the atmosphere
- Stabilize the upper layers of soil and lock in carbon all ready present
- Provide protection for other flora and fauna to repopulated the area
- Encourage the return of indigenous species
- Improve soil quality and bio-diversity
- Replenish groundwater aquifers
- Improve living standards in the locality
- Provide areas of recreation for the local community
Removing the farm from the normal production process will remove our main source of income, and so we need to provide ourselves with an alternative means. To do this, we have decided to sell the future carbon content of the trees to people and businesses who would like to plant them to offset their carbon use but are unable to do so because they don’t have the space required to sow trees.
What We Offer
We offer a complete package and the reassurance that the tree or trees you purchase will be maintained until they mature. When you donate your tree, we will assign it an individual number and issue you with a certificate of ownership stating the species of tree and its projected lifetime carbon absorption. When your tree is planted we intend to have it tagged with your unique number, so it can be identified as yours at all times. Upon request, we will happily update you as to the status of your tree. We are aiming to offer this service to customers once every two years.
Most of the carbon offsetting firms offer sponsorship of trees. This leaves the consumer with no ownership of the tree they have sponsored. A lot of these companies plant their trees in third world countries. Because most of these countries have a history of instability, there is no guarantee that the plantations will not the cleared to make way for farms once more.
We offer a guarantee that your tree will be planted and maintained until it matures. After four to five years, once the forest is established, we aim to open it up to the public and if you wish, you can come and see your tree. It is for these reasons that we believe our endeavour to be unique.
